Description
Watermelon has a sweet, refreshing taste and a juicy, grainy texture; the flesh is usually light red or pink with small black seeds (seedless varieties are also available), covered by a green, striped rind. It is low in calories, mainly composed of water, and provides vitamins C and A (beta-carotene), lycopene, potassium, and antioxidants that support hydration, heart health, and have anti-inflammatory effects. In the kitchen, watermelon works great raw in salads, cocktails, smoothies, and sorbets, as an ingredient in salsas, and also in combination with feta cheese, mint, lemon, or prosciutto; it can also be grilled. Store the whole fruit at room temperature until ripe, after cutting keep it tightly wrapped in the refrigerator and consume within 2–3 days, or freeze cut pieces for smoothies.
