Description
Fresh pineapple has an intense, sweet-tart flavor and juicy, golden flesh with a slightly fibrous texture, surrounded by a hard, spiky skin topped with a green crown of leaves. It is rich in vitamin C, manganese, fiber, and the enzyme bromelain, as well as small amounts of B vitamins and antioxidants, which support immunity, digestion, anti-inflammatory action, and the health of bones and the circulatory system. In the kitchen, fresh pineapple works well in salads, salsas, smoothies, desserts, grilled with meat, or as an ingredient in marinades and seafood dishes, adding a tropical freshness and balancing sweetness with acidity. The ripe fruit is best purchased by its aroma at the base and a slight give; store at room temperature for a maximum of 1–2 days, in the refrigerator for 3–5 days, and cut in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.
