Long wheat roll (hoagie roll type)
Description
A long wheat roll, known as a hoagie roll, has a light, thin crust and a soft, porous crumb with a delicate, slightly sweet, and yeasty aroma. It resembles an elongated bread with a uniform, golden crust that can be easily sliced open to accommodate generous fillings. Nutritionally, it is primarily a source of carbohydrates that quickly provide energy, contains a moderate amount of protein, and has a low fat content; it is often enriched with B vitamins and iron. For health reasons, it is advisable to choose whole grain versions or pair it with proteins and vegetables, as refined flour has less fiber and can raise glucose levels. The long roll is perfect for sub sandwiches, hoagies, paninis, hot dogs, or casseroles, holding moist fillings well and toasting to a crisp. Store in a dry place in a paper or linen bag for a few days, and for longer storage, freeze individually wrapped in foil, avoiding the refrigerator, which speeds up staleness.
