Five spice powder

🌱 Vegetarian 🌿 Vegan

Description

Five Spice Powder is an aromatic blend typical of Chinese cuisine, usually in the form of a fine brown powder with visible pieces of star anise, cloves, cinnamon (cassia), Sichuan pepper, and fennel. Its flavor profile combines sweet, spicy, and slightly anise notes with a warm, woody bitterness and a characteristic, gently numbing accent of Sichuan pepper. Nutritionally, the spice is low in calories and provides trace amounts of fiber and minerals, while its ingredients exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and aid digestion. It works well as a seasoning for meats (pork, duck, chicken), braised dishes, marinades, stir-fries, soups, and also for baked goods or desserts with a spicy character. It should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry, and dark place away from heat sources; for best aroma, it is best used within about 6–12 months, and versions with whole spices stay fresh longer.
