Salted herring (fillets)
Description
Salted herring (fillets) are juicy, slightly oily pieces with a distinct salty flavor, a gently spicy fish aftertaste, and a creamy, flaky texture. They are usually pink or gray-pink in appearance, with a thin layer of skin and an aromatic smell characteristic of preserved fish. They are a rich source of high-quality protein and valuable omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D and B12, and selenium, which support heart health, brain function, and immunity; due to their high salt content, it is advisable to consume them in moderation, especially with hypertension. In the kitchen, herring is suitable as an appetizer, sandwich filling, ingredient for salads, side dish for potatoes, and also pickled in vinegar, cream, or oil with onions and herbs. Store the fillets in the refrigerator tightly sealed, preferably in the original brine or covered with oil, and consume within a few days after opening; they can be frozen, but the texture may change slightly after thawing.
