Plant-based cream (e.g. soy or oat)
Description
Plant-based cream (e.g. soy or oat) is a smooth, creamy product with a uniform, light cream color; the taste is usually mild and neutral, with a slight sweetness in the case of oat or a subtle "soy" note in the soy version. The consistency may be thinner than dairy cream, but there are also thickened versions available for culinary use. Nutritionally, plant-based creams typically contain less saturated fat than cow's cream and are often fortified with calcium and vitamins. Soy versions provide plant protein, while oat versions offer more carbohydrates and fiber. They are a good choice for those on a plant-based diet or with lactose intolerance. In the kitchen, they work well in soups, sauces, casseroles, desserts, and coffee, replacing traditional cream. Once opened, they should be stored in the refrigerator, shaken well before use, and consumed within 7–10 days; freezing is not recommended as it may cause separation.
