Basil sprig for decoration
Description
A sprig of basil for decoration has a fresh, slightly sweet-peppery taste with hints of cloves and an intense green aroma; its thin stems and shiny, light to dark green leaves add elegance and an immediate visual impact to dishes. It is most commonly used on top of dishes such as salads, tomatoes with mozzarella, pasta, pizza, soups, or cocktails; it can be placed whole or torn for a fuller release of aroma. A sprig of basil is low in calories, provides vitamins K, A, and C, as well as minerals like manganese and iron, and the phenolic compounds it contains (e.g., eugenol) have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may support immunity and digestion. To maintain freshness, trim the ends, store briefly in a glass of water or wrapped in a damp towel in the refrigerator; for longer storage, freeze in oil or prepare pesto.
