Canned corn

🌱 Vegetarian 🌿 Vegan

Description

Canned corn is a sweet, slightly starchy snack with light cream-yellow, shiny kernels that retain their firmness and slightly juicy texture after draining. It has a subtly sweet flavor with a neutral background, making it a versatile addition to many dishes. Nutritionally, it mainly provides carbohydrates and fiber, has a moderate protein content, as well as B vitamins, vitamin C, and antioxidants (lutein and zeaxanthin beneficial for vision), with low fat content. However, attention should be paid to the salt or sugar content in the brine; rinsing under running water reduces sodium. Canned corn pairs well with salads, soups, stews, salsas, Mexican dishes, casseroles, and patties, combining nicely with beans, tomatoes, peppers, cheeses, and herbs. An unused can should be stored in a cool, dry place; once opened, the contents should be transferred to an airtight container and kept in the refrigerator for 3–4 days or the drained kernels can be frozen for several months.
