Turmeric
Description
Turmeric is an aromatic rhizome with an earthy, slightly bitter and peppery flavor with hints of ginger; in its fresh form, it has a brown skin and a vibrant orange-yellow interior, while in powdered form, it creates a vivid yellow-orange powder. Although consumed in small amounts it provides few calories, it is a source of fiber, iron, and manganese and contains curcumin—a compound with documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that supports overall immunity and metabolic health. Turmeric pairs wonderfully with Indian and Asian dishes, curry blends, rice, braised vegetables, meat marinades, soups, and drinks like "golden milk" or smoothies, where it adds color and depth of flavor. It is best stored in an airtight container, away from light and moisture; powdered turmeric can last for many months in a cool, dry place, while fresh rhizome should be kept in the refrigerator wrapped in a paper towel or frozen for longer storage.
