Coarsely ground black pepper
Description
Coarsely ground black pepper is a blend of individual, dark brown granules with a distinct, sharp, and peppery note, accompanied by a slight resinous bitterness and subtle citrus undertones. The coarseness of the grind provides a noticeable texture and a "crunch" effect in dishes, while the intense aroma is released with brief sautéing or as a finishing spice. From a nutritional standpoint, it delivers few calories but contains piperine—a compound with antioxidant and mildly anti-inflammatory properties—as well as trace amounts of vitamins and minerals like vitamin K, iron, and manganese; it may also enhance the absorption of certain ingredients, such as curcumin. Coarsely ground pepper pairs excellently with meats, stews, marinades, roasted vegetables, sauces, and eggs, and serves as a finishing spice for salads and sandwiches, adding character and spicy depth to dishes. Store it in an airtight, opaque container in a cool, dry place, away from heat and moisture sources; for best freshness, use within a few months of opening.
