Romaine lettuce
Description
Romaine lettuce has elongated, compact heads with dark green outer leaves and a light green, crunchy center; the taste is fresh, slightly sweet with a delicate, pleasant bitterness. It is low in calories and rich in water, fiber, and vitamins A, K, and folate, as well as vitamin C and minerals such as potassium, which supports hydration, digestion, bone health, and vision, and also boosts the immune system. In the kitchen, it works great as a base for salads (classic Caesar dressing), an addition to sandwiches, wraps, and tacos, as well as for quick grilling or brief blanching. To extend freshness, do not wash the head before storing, remove broken leaves, wrap it in a dry paper towel, and place it in a perforated bag or container in the refrigerator drawer (1–4°C); use within about 5–7 days and keep away from ethylene-producing fruits.
