Candied orange peel
Description
Candied orange peel consists of thin strips or cubes of fruit peel with a shiny, slightly translucent surface and an intense sweet-and-sour flavor with a distinct bitter note of orange peel. By cooking in sugar syrup, it acquires a soft, chewy texture and an attractive golden color. Nutritionally, it is a source of calories and simple sugars, contains small amounts of fiber, as well as phytochemicals and antioxidants characteristic of citrus peels, which may support cell protection as part of a balanced diet; however, it should be consumed in moderation due to its high sugar content. In the kitchen, it pairs perfectly with baked goods, desserts, chocolate, liqueurs, fruit salads, and cheeses, as well as serving as a decoration and ingredient in glazes. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place or in the refrigerator to extend its shelf life; it can also be frozen.
