Tomato sauce
Description
Tomato sauce is a thick, velvety emulsion with an intense red color and a fresh, sweet-and-sour taste with distinct umami notes. It can be smooth or contain pieces of tomatoes and herbs; the aroma is often complemented by garlic, onion, and basil, making it a versatile addition to dishes from both Italian and Mediterranean cuisines. Nutritionally, tomato sauce provides few calories and is a source of vitamin C, potassium, and lycopene—a powerful antioxidant beneficial for heart health and cell protection. In a homemade version, salt and sugar can be reduced, increasing fiber and nutrient content. The sauce pairs perfectly with pasta, pizza, braised meats, casseroles, and as a base for soups or sauces. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4–7 days or freeze in portions for up to 3 months.
