Fresh peppermint
Description
Fresh peppermint has an intense, cooling flavor with a distinct menthol finish and a strong aroma that enlivens dishes. The leaves are light to dark green, usually with serrated edges and a delicate, velvety texture, while the stems are compact and juicy, making them easy to chop and use as a garnish. Mint is low in calories and provides vitamins A, C, as well as minerals like iron and manganese; it also contains essential oils (menthol) that soothe digestive issues, have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, and refresh breath while providing relief from nausea or headaches. It works well in teas, cocktails (e.g., mojito), salads, sauces, marinades, desserts, and Mediterranean and Asian cuisines as a fresh accent. To prolong freshness, store mint in the refrigerator wrapped in a damp paper towel or placed in a glass of water and covered with a bag; it can also be frozen in cubes with water or oil.
