Coconut water
Description
Coconut water is a clear, slightly opalescent liquid with a delicate, sweet-nutty flavor and subtle acidity; it is refreshing and milder than coconut milk, with a smooth yet light texture. It contains few calories, is rich in electrolytes—primarily potassium, as well as magnesium and sodium—and has small amounts of carbohydrates and B vitamins, making it a good hydrating drink after exercise and a supplement that supports the body's mineral balance. In the kitchen, it works well as a base for cocktails and smoothies, a natural isotonic drink, an ingredient in marinades, sauces, light soups, and rice cookers, as well as a refreshing addition to drinks and fresh fruit salads; it pairs well with tropical fruits, citrus, fish, and poultry. It should be stored in a cool place: fresh, straight from the nut, should be consumed within 24–48 hours in the refrigerator, an opened package should be kept chilled and used quickly, and longer storage can be achieved by freezing; avoid exposure to heat and check labels for added sugar.
