Challah
Description
Challah is a braided, egg bread with a golden, shiny crust and a soft, slightly sweet crumb; the aroma resembles fresh bread with a subtle hint of butter and vanilla, and the texture is fluffy and delicate. Nutritionally, it primarily provides carbohydrates that are quickly and slowly absorbed, a moderate amount of protein from eggs and milk, and fat from butter or oil; it also contains B vitamins, iron, and small amounts of calcium, making it a source of quick energy and some micronutrients as part of a balanced diet, although due to its calorie content and refined flour, it should be consumed in moderation. Challah is great for breakfast and sandwiches, as a base for French toast, with butter, jam, or cheeses, and also as an accompaniment to holiday dishes. It is best stored wrapped in a linen cloth or in a plastic bag at room temperature for 1–2 days; it can be sliced and frozen, and before serving, briefly reheated to regain freshness.
