Giant puffball
Description
The shaggy parasol mushroom is a large, striking fungus with a wide, brown-scaled cap and a slender stem ending in a movable ring; its flesh has a delicate, slightly nutty flavor and a firm, meaty texture, making it a good substitute for animal protein in dishes. The nutritional values of the shaggy parasol mushroom include low energy content with relatively high levels of protein, fiber, B vitamins, and minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, and selenium; mushrooms also provide antioxidants and may support immunity and metabolism. In the kitchen, the shaggy parasol mushroom is suitable for frying, breading, grilling, stuffing, as well as for soups and sauces; it pairs very well with butter, garlic, cream, and herbs. Store fresh mushrooms briefly in the refrigerator in a paper bag (2–4 days), or dry or freeze them after preparation for longer storage; avoid plastic packaging and only collect certain specimens.
