Description
Chili pepper is characterized by its intense, spicy flavor and slender, usually elongated shape, with colors ranging from green to yellow to deep red, and its heat is measured in Scoville units. It contains few calories but is high in vitamin C, provitamin A, and antioxidants; capsaicin, responsible for the burning sensation, has anti-inflammatory properties, speeds up metabolism, and can alleviate pain, although it can be irritating for sensitive individuals. In the kitchen, chili pepper adds a spicy depth to dishes from salsas and marinades to soups, curries, and grilled foods, and its heat can be adjusted by removing seeds and membranes. It should be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container or bag with holes for 1–2 weeks; it can also be dried, frozen, or pickled for longer storage; when handling, it is advisable to wear gloves to avoid irritation.
