White rice (dry)
Description
Dry white rice has a mild, almost neutral flavor with slightly sweet notes and a smooth, pearl-white color of the grains, which become soft and fluffy or sticky depending on the variety when cooked. It is mainly a source of easily digestible carbohydrates and energy, contains small amounts of protein and fat, and in many countries is often enriched with B vitamins and iron; it is gluten-free and gentle on the digestive system, although it has less fiber than brown rice. In the kitchen, it serves as a versatile base for main dishes, pilafs, risottos, sushi, rice desserts, and as a side for vegetable, meat, and sauce dishes. Store dry rice in an airtight container in a cool, dry, and dark place, away from moisture and pests; with proper storage, it retains freshness for many months.
