Leafy lettuce
Description
Leaf lettuce has delicate, loose leaves that vary in color from light green to reddish, with a soft, crisp texture and a mild, slightly refreshing taste with a subtle bitterness in some varieties. It is low in calories and rich in water, fiber, and vitamins A, K, and folic acid, as well as antioxidants and minerals in small amounts, which supports hydration, eye health, blood and bone health, and weight management. In the kitchen, leaf lettuce works great as a base for salads, an addition to sandwiches and wraps, a delicate topping for burgers, and as a fresh accent for cold dips or lightly blanched for warm dishes. It is best stored unwashed in the refrigerator in a perforated bag or container with a paper towel to maintain dryness; use within 3–7 days and keep away from ethylene-producing fruits.
