Toasted sesame seeds (optional)
Description
Toasted sesame has an intense, nutty aroma and a deeper, slightly smoky flavor than raw sesame; the seeds take on a golden-brown hue and become crunchy when toasted, enriching dishes with a distinct umami note. Nutritionally, sesame is a source of healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, protein, fiber, and important minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc. The lignans (sesamin, sesamol) it contains have antioxidant properties and support heart health; however, it is worth noting that it is calorie-dense. Toasted sesame pairs perfectly with salads, sushi, bowls, spreads and sauces (e.g., tahini), bread, marinades, and dishes from Asian and Mediterranean cuisines, adding character and texture. Store it in an airtight container in a cool, dark place; for longer storage, keep it in the refrigerator or freezer to preserve its aroma and prevent rancidity.
