Table salt
Description
Table salt is a basic seasoning with a distinct, clean, salty flavor and a crystalline, usually white form, available in grains from fine to coarse. Chemically, it is sodium chloride, which in small amounts is essential for the proper functioning of the body, supporting electrolyte balance, nerve conduction, and muscle function. However, it should be used in moderation, as excess sodium can contribute to hypertension and water retention. In the kitchen, salt enhances and balances flavors; it is used for seasoning dishes, baking, curing, preserving, and during fermentation. Fine salt is convenient for immediate salting, while coarse salt is used for marinades and baking. Store it in a dry, airtight container away from moisture and strong odors, in a cool, dark place; to prevent clumping, you can add a few grains of rice or a special moisture-absorbing agent.
