Golden syrup
Description
Golden syrup is a thick, sticky syrup with an amber-gold color, sweet, slightly caramel aroma, and silky consistency. Nutritionally, it is dominated by simple sugars, is high in calories, and contains virtually no protein, fat, or fiber; it provides immediate energy but not significant amounts of vitamins or minerals, so it is advisable to use it sparingly as a source of quick energy. Culinary applications include baking, toppings and glazes, adding to oatmeal, desserts, puddings, sauces, and marinades, where it brings moisture and a caramel flavor. It should be stored in a tightly sealed jar in a dry, cool place away from direct light; it does not require refrigeration, and any crystallization can be easily removed by warming in a water bath.
