Prosciutto ham
Description
Prosciutto is an Italian dry-cured ham, sliced into very thin, translucent, pink-carmine pieces with a silky, slightly fatty texture. The flavor is subtly salty with hints of sweetness, nuttiness, and umami, making it an aromatic addition to dishes. Nutritionally, prosciutto provides concentrated protein as well as B vitamins, iron, and zinc, but it also contains salt and fat, so it is best consumed in moderate portions as part of a balanced diet. In the kitchen, prosciutto pairs wonderfully with melon, pear, salads, pizza, pasta, and antipasti platters, as well as being enjoyed as a thin snack on its own. It should be stored chilled, wrapped in parchment or plastic wrap, at a temperature of 0–4°C and consumed within a few days after opening; a whole leg stored in a cool, dry place stays fresh longer. Avoid prolonged freezing due to changes in texture.
