Choose 4 cocktail glasses (glass coupes or martini glasses). On a small flat plate, evenly spread salt (about 8 g for all glasses). Take a lime (if using) and cut it into wedges. Before preparing the cocktail, rub the rim of each glass with one lime wedge: press the flesh against the edge and twist to moisten the rim. Immediately dip the moistened edge in salt, gently rotating the glass on the plate so that the salt adheres evenly to the wet rim. Set the glasses aside to dry slightly (1-2 minutes).
Description
Classic Margarita with salt is a refreshing cocktail from Mexico, combining bold tequila with the citrus acidity of fresh lime juice and the sweet-bitter note of triple sec liqueur (e.g., Cointreau). Served in a glass with a salted rim, it has a contrasting flavor: the salty edge enhances the acidity and aroma of the alcohol. Perfect for New Year's Eve 2025 — it looks elegant at a party, is quick to prepare, and pairs wonderfully with spicy snacks, tacos, or nachos. Visually: a bright, slightly cloudy drink in a coupe or cocktail glass, with a rim evenly coated in salt and a lime slice as decoration. Sweetness can be adjusted (simple syrup) or served in the classic version without additions.

Preparation steps
Preparing the glass
Optional: preparing a 1:1 syrup
If you want to reduce acidity, prepare a quick sugar syrup. In a small saucepan, combine sugar (60 g) with water (60 ml). Heat over low heat, stirring with a wooden spoon until the sugar completely dissolves and the liquid becomes clear (1-2 minutes). After dissolving, set aside to cool to room temperature (5-10 minutes). Pour the syrup into a small pitcher or bottle and set aside. Use it in amounts of 10-30 ml per serving as desired.
Preparing the cocktail
Fill the shaker halfway with ice (about 150–200 g) to chill the drink well while mixing. Pour the tequila (240 ml) into the shaker first, then the triple sec (120 ml) and fresh lime juice (120 ml). If you are using homemade or store-bought syrup, add the amount you prefer now (start with 30 ml of syrup for 4 servings = 7–8 ml per serving).
Close the shaker tightly with a glass or lid and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds. The goal is to quickly chill and slightly dilute the drink by melting a small amount of ice. The start of shaking should be firm and rhythmic; after about 10 seconds, you will feel that the outside of the shaker is very cold and condensation appears — this is a sign that mixing has been sufficient.
Serving
Prepare the previously mentioned glasses with a salted rim. Strain the contents of the shaker through a fine strainer directly into the glasses — a classic Margarita is served 'straight up' (without ice in the glass). Pour an equal amount per serving (about 120 ml per glass). If you prefer to serve it on the rocks, add a few ice cubes to each glass and pour the cocktail over the ice.
Decoration and serving
Garnish each glass with a slice of lime placed on the rim or a thin lime peel. Serve immediately — Margarita tastes best very cold and fresh. For New Year's Eve, you can arrange the glasses on a tray with small napkins or decorate the tray with a few lime slices and some sea salt chips.
Fun Fact
The name 'Margarita' comes from the Spanish name meaning 'pearl' or 'daisy' (margarita). There are many legends about the origin of the cocktail — one of them says that it was created in the 1930s-1940s in Mexico for an American actress who was allergic to all alcohols except tequila.

Tips
Serve the Margarita very chilled: chill the glasses in the freezer for 10 minutes before serving. Enhance the atmosphere: serve with spicy snacks (nachos, breaded shrimp) or light tapas. If you're making a large quantity, prepare a proportionally larger batch in a pitcher and keep it chilled; however, it's best to mix individual servings just before serving.
The cocktail is best consumed immediately. If you prepare a base mix (tequila + triple sec + juice), you can store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours in a sealed jar, but remember that fresh lime juice loses its aroma. Do not freeze alcoholic mixtures (it may change the texture). Store simple syrup in the fridge for up to 2 weeks in a closed bottle.
