Watermelon
Description
Watermelon is a juicy, sweet fruit with a crunchy texture; its flesh can be pink or intensely red with small black seeds, surrounded by a thick, green skin with light stripes. It contains over 90% water, is low in calories, and provides vitamin C, provitamin A, potassium, lycopene, and the amino acid citrulline, which support hydration, have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, and may positively influence the circulatory system and recovery after exercise. In the kitchen, watermelon works great as a standalone dessert, an ingredient in salads, smoothies, sashimi, salsas, or cold soups, as well as in combination with feta cheese, mint, prosciutto, or grilled. The whole fruit can be stored at room temperature until ripe, and once cut, it should be kept in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 2–3 days, while any excess can be frozen for use in smoothies.
