Brandy or dark rum
Description
Brandy or dark rum are aromatic, amber to deep mahogany drinks with a rich bouquet: brandy offers notes of vanilla, oak, dried fruits, and caramel, while dark rum provides molasses, toffee, and spicy tones with a hint of smoke. In the mouth, they can be full, smooth, and warm, with a long-lasting finish. In terms of nutritional value, they are almost exclusively a source of calories from alcohol — about 220–250 kcal per 100 ml — containing few vitamins and minerals; with moderate consumption, potential beneficial effects on the circulatory system can be noted, but moderation and awareness of contraindications are most important. In the kitchen, they work well for sauces, marinades, and desserts (flambé, crème brûlée, caramel sauces), as well as for cocktails, adding depth of flavor. They should be stored in tightly closed bottles, in a cool, dark place, upright; they do not require aging after opening, but prolonged exposure to oxygen can mellow the aroma.
