Panko breadcrumbs
Description
Panko breadcrumbs are a Japanese type of breadcrumb made from crustless bread, characterized by light, flaky crumbs and a neutral, slightly toasted flavor, which, when fried, create an exceptionally crispy, protective structure for dishes. Nutritionally, panko is mainly carbohydrates with a small amount of protein and fat; due to its fluffiness, it provides a crunchy effect with relatively less fat usage than traditional breading, and whole grain versions offer more fiber and minerals. Panko works great as a coating for fish, poultry, and vegetables, an addition to casseroles, a topping for gratins, or a light ingredient in meatballs, providing structure without heaviness. It should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place; for longer shelf life, it can be kept in the refrigerator or freezer to avoid moisture and pests.
