Candied orange peel
Description
Candied orange peel has an intense, sweet-bitter flavor with a distinct note of essential oils and a pleasant, chewy texture. It resembles shiny, translucent strips or cubes of deep orange color, often lightly dusted with sugar. Nutritionally, it mainly consists of carbohydrates and sugars, providing energy; it contains small amounts of fiber, vitamin C, and phytochemicals such as flavonoids and essential oils, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Due to its high sugar content, it is best consumed in moderation, although its addition to dishes can support digestion and improve mood thanks to its intense aroma. Candied peel pairs wonderfully with baked goods (cakes, panettone, cookies), desserts, chocolate, liqueurs, and cocktails, as well as providing a flavor contrast in salads or with cheeses and meats. It should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry, and dark place; keeping it in the fridge or freezer will extend its shelf life for several months.
