Popcorn kernels
Description
Popcorn corn is hard, small kernels that are yellow or cream-colored, which burst into light, fluffy white flakes with a delicate, slightly nutty flavor and pleasant aroma when popped. Due to the structure of the kernel, popcorn has a crunchy outer shell and a soft center, making it appealing both savory and sweet. It is a whole grain that provides complex carbohydrates, fiber, plant protein, and antioxidants (polyphenols), with a relatively low fat content before adding toppings, which promotes satiety and digestive health. In the kitchen, it works well as a classic snack with butter, salt, or caramel, a base for seasoned mixes, an addition to salads and trail mixes, and an element in desserts and fusion dishes. It should be stored in a sealed, dry, and cool place, away from light and moisture, in an airtight package or jar; with proper storage, the kernels maintain quality for many months.
