Almonds (whole, skin can remain)
Description
Almonds (whole, skin may remain) have a mild, slightly sweet and nutty flavor, and an oval shape with a thin, brown skin that adds a slightly earthy note and contains antioxidants. The flesh is firm, creamy when crushed, and responds well to roasting, which brings out the aroma. They are rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, protein, fiber, vitamin E, magnesium, and minerals that support heart health, blood sugar control, and a feeling of fullness. In the kitchen, they work well as a snack, an ingredient in muesli, additions to salads, baked goods, milk, almond butter, breading, or pesto. To maintain freshness and flavor, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry, and dark place; they will stay fresh in the refrigerator for several months, and even longer in the freezer.
