Mozzarella (fresh)
Description
Fresh mozzarella is a delicate, milky cheese with a mild, slightly salty flavor and a soft, elastic texture; it usually comes in white balls or blocks, often stored in a watery brine, which gives it juiciness and a creamy center. From a nutritional standpoint, it provides high-quality protein, calcium, and vitamin B12, supporting bone health and muscle functions, although it contains a moderate amount of fat and sodium, so it's worth controlling portions or choosing lower-fat versions. Mozzarella pairs wonderfully with tomatoes and basil in a caprese salad, melts on pizzas and casseroles, and is great for sandwiches, pasta, and grilling in a pan, where it releases a creamy flavor. It should be stored in the refrigerator in its original brine or wrapped in a damp towel, best consumed within a few days; freezing is possible, but it deteriorates the texture.
