Saffron threads
Description
Saffron threads are thin, intensely coloring, crimson-orange stigmas with a delicate, floral-honey aroma and a slightly bitter, earthy flavor; they are used in the form of whole threads or after a brief soaking/"rinsing" in warm water or milk, which releases their deep golden color and aroma. In the kitchen, they add elegance to risottos, paellas, fish soups, and braised meats, pairing perfectly with seafood, poultry, rice, creamy desserts, and products with vanilla and citrus flavors. Saffron threads contain bioactive compounds (crocins, safranal, picrocrocin) with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may support mood and cognitive functions and alleviate menstrual discomfort, although they do not replace medical treatment. They should be stored in a dry, airtight, opaque container in a cool place away from light and moisture; whole threads retain their aroma longer than powdered saffron, so use them sparingly to achieve full flavor.
