Description

Halloumi is a semi-hard cheese with a light cream color, a distinct, slightly salty note, and a characteristic elastic, "squeaky" texture. When pan-fried or grilled, it develops a golden, crispy crust and a soft interior. It is mainly made from sheep's and goat's milk (sometimes with a mix of cow's milk), and it is rich in protein and calcium, supporting muscle and bone health, although it contains relatively high amounts of fat and sodium, so it should be consumed in moderation. In the kitchen, halloumi works great grilled, fried, or baked as an addition to salads, sandwiches, wraps, and dishes with vegetables and fruits; it pairs well with olive oil, lemon, and herbs. It should be stored in the refrigerator in its original brine or an airtight container; once opened, it should be used within a few days, and freezing is possible, but it may change the texture.
