Hoisin sauce
Description
Hoisin sauce is a thick, glossy, dark brown sauce with a distinct sweet-salty and umami flavor, featuring notes of soy, garlic, five-spice, and sometimes a subtle spicy hint. It has a creamy consistency, glazes easily on meat and vegetables, and the aroma is intense and spicy. Nutritionally, it is a source of protein and minerals from soy, but it can be quite caloric due to the added sugar and is relatively high in salt, so it’s best to use it in moderation; the spices may add antioxidant compounds beneficial for health. Hoisin sauce works great as a glaze for duck or pork, a base for marinades, an addition to stir-fries, a dip for spring rolls, and an ingredient in banh mi sandwiches and noodle bowls. It should be stored in a cool, dry place before opening, and after opening, kept in the refrigerator in an airtight jar and used within a few months, shaking before use.
