Pomegranate syrup (grenadine)
Description
Pomegranate syrup (grenadine) is a thick, ruby elixir with a sweet-tart, distinctly fruity aroma featuring notes of astringency typical of pomegranate juice. In its natural versions, it provides a deep, slightly astringent flavor, while commercial varieties are often noticeably sweeter with added sugar and colorants. Nutritionally, it is calorie-dense and rich in carbohydrates, but natural syrup delivers antioxidants, polyphenols, and small amounts of vitamin C and minerals; it may support cardiovascular health with moderate consumption, but one should be cautious of its sugar content. In the kitchen, grenadine is used in cocktails and mocktails, lemonades, desserts, sauces, marinades, and as a topping for yogurt or oatmeal, where it adds color and acidity. Once opened, store in the refrigerator in a sealed bottle and use within a few months, avoiding light and high temperatures.
