Start by thoroughly preparing the fruits and ginger. Wash the orange under running warm water using a vegetable brush. Then, pour boiling water over it, covering the entire surface to remove the protective wax. Dry the orange with a paper towel. Using a sharp knife, slice it into pieces about 0.5 cm thick. Peel the ginger with a small spoon (scraping with a spoon is the easiest way to remove the skin from the crevices) and cut it into thin slices.

Preparation steps
Preparation of ingredients
Combining and heating
In a large pot (with a capacity of at least 3 liters), pour in 1000 ml of apple juice and 500 ml of cranberry juice. Add the prepared slices of orange and ginger. Also, toss in all the dry spices: 2 cinnamon sticks, 3 star anise, and 6 cloves. You can stick the cloves into one of the orange slices, making it easier to remove them later. Gently stir everything with a wooden spoon.
Place a pot on the stove over medium heat. Slowly heat the drink until it becomes very hot, but do not bring it to a boil. This process should take about 15-20 minutes. Steam should appear on the surface, and the aroma of the spices will become intense. Reduce the burner to the lowest setting and maintain the mulled wine at this temperature for another 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Stir occasionally.
Seasoning and Serving
Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit for 2-3 minutes to cool slightly. Now is the time to add sweetness if you like. Add 2 tablespoons of honey (or maple syrup) and stir well until completely dissolved. Taste and add more sweetener if needed. Prepare mugs or glasses made of thick glass. Using a ladle, pour the hot drink. You can strain it through a sieve beforehand for clarity, or pour it with the spices and fruits for a more rustic effect.
Garnish each serving. You can add a fresh slice of orange to each mug, a cinnamon stick from cooking, or toss in a few fresh cranberries for color and flavor. Serve immediately while the mulled wine is hot and most aromatic.
Fun Fact
The tradition of drinking hot, spiced beverages dates back to ancient Rome, where wine was heated with spices to protect against the cold. In medieval England, 'wassail' was popular, a hot cider or beer with spices that was toasted for prosperity and good harvests. Our non-alcoholic mulled drink is a modern and healthier version of these historical beverages.

Tips
Serve the mulled wine in glass mugs with handles or ceramic cups that retain heat well. Add a fresh slice of orange and a few cranberries to each serving. For adults who would like an alcoholic version, you can add 30 ml of rum or brandy to each serving just before serving.
The leftover mulled wine can be stored in the refrigerator in a closed pitcher or jar for up to 3 days. Before serving, it should be strained from the fruits and spices. Reheat over low heat, without bringing it to a boil, to preserve its aroma.
