Fresh basil
Description
Fresh basil is an aromatic herb with light green, sometimes glossy leaves and gently wavy edges, whose flavor combines sweetness with a distinct, spicy note of anise and cloves. Its intense aroma and soft texture make the leaves best added at the end of cooking or as a fresh accent. Basil is low in calories, provides vitamins A, K, and C, as well as minerals such as calcium and iron, and contains antioxidants (including eugenol) with anti-inflammatory properties that support digestion and the circulatory system. In the kitchen, fresh basil pairs wonderfully with tomatoes, mozzarella, olive oil, pasta, soups, and pesto sauces, as well as a fresh finishing touch for meat and vegetable dishes. To preserve its aroma, do not wash the leaves before storing; place the bunch in a glass of water like flowers or wrap it in a damp paper towel and put it in an airtight container in the fridge; use within a few days or freeze in oil or as pesto for longer storage.
