Brown sugar
Description
Brown sugar has a soft, slightly moist texture and a color ranging from light brown to dark, with distinct notes of caramel and molasses that give it a deeper, slightly toffee flavor than white sugar. Nutritionally, it is primarily a source of sucrose and provides calories similar to white sugar; it contains small amounts of minerals (calcium, potassium, iron) derived from molasses, but the health benefits are limited and require moderate consumption as a quick source of energy. In the kitchen, brown sugar works well in baking, cookies, caramelizing, sauces, glazes, and marinades, where it enhances flavor and adds moisture. It should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place to prevent hardening; if it hardens, it can be softened with apple slices, a damp paper towel, or by briefly heating in the microwave.
