Cardamom pods
Description
Cardamom seeds are small, triangular pods with a greenish to brownish hue, containing dark, aromatic seeds. The flavor is intensely spicy, with citrus, camphor, and slightly sweet notes; the aroma is fresh, floral, and lingers long after being crushed. In terms of nutritional value, cardamom provides fiber, minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium, as well as essential oils rich in antioxidants. Traditionally, it is attributed with properties that aid digestion, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects, as well as freshening breath; studies suggest it may support overall health as part of a balanced diet. In the kitchen, whole seeds pair excellently with beverages (chai, coffee), rice dishes, curries, marinades, baked goods, and desserts, complementing both sweet and savory flavors. To preserve the aroma, store cardamom whole in an airtight container in a cool, dark place; ground cardamom loses intensity faster and should be stored for a shorter time or in the refrigerator.
