Bay leaf
Description
Bay leaf is an aromatic, elongated leaf with a smooth, dark green (fresh) or olive-brown (dried) color, featuring an intense, slightly bitter flavor with hints of eucalyptus and pine. It contains essential oils (including eucalyptol), antioxidants, and trace amounts of vitamins A, C, and minerals such as iron and manganese, which may support anti-inflammatory processes and digestion, as well as have antibacterial properties. Culinary uses include braised meats, soups, sauces, stews, and marinades, where the leaf releases its aroma during long cooking and is usually removed before serving. It is best to store whole, dried leaves in an airtight, dark container in a cool, dry place; fresh leaves can be frozen or stored in the refrigerator for a short time to preserve their aroma.
