Poppy seeds

🌱 Vegetarian

Description

Poppy seeds are small, oval seeds ranging in color from deep blue-black to creamy white, with a slightly shiny, uneven surface. They have a pleasant, slightly nutty, subtly sweet flavor and a crunchy texture that enhances both sweet and savory dishes. Poppy seeds are calorie-dense but nutritious: they provide unsaturated fatty acids, protein, fiber, and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron, as well as B vitamins. They may support bone health, the cardiovascular system, and digestion when consumed in moderation. In the kitchen, they are used in cakes, poppy seed rolls, buns, poppy seed fillings, sauces, salads, and as a topping for bread; they pair well with honey, citrus fruits, cheeses, and grains. Store poppy seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place or in the refrigerator/freezer to prevent rancidity; ground seeds lose freshness more quickly. It is worth noting that trace opiate alkaloids may affect drug tests with high consumption.
