Description

Coconut milk is a thick, creamy liquid with a milky white color and a distinct, sweet aroma of coconut; it comes in versions ranging from very fatty and thick to diluted and more liquid. Nutritionally, it is calorie-dense and rich in saturated fats (mainly MCT), also providing minerals such as manganese, copper, and iron, as well as small amounts of protein; it is naturally lactose-free and popular in plant-based diets. Moderate consumption may support satiety and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, although individuals with heart conditions should monitor their total intake of saturated fats. In the kitchen, coconut milk pairs well with curries, soups, sauces, smoothies, desserts, and baked goods, replacing cream or cow's milk in vegan versions. It should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator after opening and used within 4–7 days; before use, shake or stir the separated layers, and any excess can be portioned and possibly frozen for short periods, keeping in mind the change in texture after thawing.
