Sesame (optional)
Description
Sesame (optional) are small, oval seeds in shades of white, cream, or black with a mild, nutty flavor that becomes more intense and slightly buttery when toasted. With their subtle aroma and crunchy texture, they work well as a decoration and seasoning for dishes. Sesame seeds are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, fiber, plant protein, B vitamins, and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and copper; they also contain lignans (sesamin) with antioxidant properties that may support heart and bone health. Sesame is used in salads, bread, for breading, in hummus and tahini, sauces, Asian dishes, and desserts. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place; unroasted seeds will last for several months, while roasted ones are better kept in the refrigerator or freezer to maintain freshness and prevent rancidity.
