Worcestershire sauce
Description
Worcestershire sauce is a dark brown, liquid seasoning sauce with a complex, intense flavor profile — sweet and sour with distinct notes of umami, fish sauce, molasses, vinegar, and spices. It has a clear, syrupy consistency and a strong aroma that enhances the flavor of dishes in small amounts, adding depth and a spicy saltiness. Nutritionally, the sauce provides few calories and small amounts of protein and minerals mainly from anchovies and molasses, but it can be quite high in sodium, so it’s best to use it sparingly; however, it is not a significant source of vitamins. It is typically used in marinades, sauces, meat dishes, stews, soups, dressings, and cocktails (e.g., Bloody Mary), where it enhances the flavor. Once opened, it should be stored in the refrigerator in a closed bottle; unopened, it can be kept in a cool, dark cupboard.
