Maple syrup
Description
Maple syrup is a thick, amber-brown liquid with a shiny, syrupy consistency and a sweet, complex flavor with notes of caramel, oak, and delicate floral hints; the darker the color, the more intense the aroma. Nutritionally, it is a concentrated source of simple sugars and calories, but it also contains trace amounts of minerals, primarily manganese and zinc, vitamins (e.g., riboflavin), and antioxidants, making it somewhat more beneficial than refined sugar, though it should be used in moderation. Culinary uses for maple syrup are versatile: it pairs well with pancakes and desserts, serves as a glaze for meats, an ingredient in marinades, dressings, and baked goods, and can be added to drinks and yogurts. Once opened, it is best stored in the refrigerator to prevent mold; portions can also be frozen for longer storage.
