Description

Cosmopolitan is a classic cocktail with a distinct fruity and sour flavor profile and a characteristic pink color. It originated in the United States in the second half of the 20th century and gained immense popularity in the 90s, partly thanks to the series "Sex and the City." The version with cranberry juice combines the aroma of vodka and orange liqueur with a slightly tart note of cranberry and the fresh acidity of lime. The cocktail is perfect as a New Year's toast — it looks impressive in a martini glass, is refreshing, and elegant. Serve chilled, preferably in well-chilled cocktail glasses, garnished with an orange peel or a slice of lime. It’s an excellent choice for welcoming the new year and for cocktail parties when you want to serve something simple yet stylish and impressive.

Preparation steps

Preparation

1

Chill the cocktail glasses: place 2 martini or coupe glasses in the freezer for at least 10 minutes or fill them with ice and water for 5 minutes, then pour out the water just before pouring the cocktail.

Use the freezer or ice containers; a chilled glass will keep the cocktail cold longer. If you forget, fill the glass with crushed ice while preparing and remove it just before pouring.
2

Squeeze the juice from the lime: cut 1–2 limes in half and squeeze the juice using a manual juicer or strainer. Measure out 30 ml of fresh juice (for 2 servings). If using a measuring cup, fill it to 30 ml.

Ingredients: Fresh lime juice
Use a manual citrus juicer or press — squeeze firmly to extract the maximum amount of juice. Be careful not to let any seeds get into the measuring cup — strain through a fine sieve if necessary.

Assembly

3

In a shaker, add ice cubes (about 120 g), pour in 90 ml of vodka, 30 ml of orange liqueur, 60 ml of cranberry juice, and 30 ml of lime juice. If you prefer a sweeter cocktail, add 20 ml of simple syrup.

Ingredients: Ice (cubes), Vodka, Orange liqueur (Cointreau / triple sec), Cranberry juice, Fresh lime juice, Simple syrup (1:1)
Use a jigger or a precise measuring spoon. Fill the shaker to about 2/3 of its volume — avoid overfilling, as the cocktail will not mix and chill properly.
4

Tightly close the shaker and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds: strong, rhythmic up-and-down movements. Continue until the outside of the shaker becomes cloudy and slightly frosted — this is a sign that the drink is properly chilled and diluted.

Ingredients: Ice (cubes), Vodka, Orange liqueur (Cointreau / triple sec), Cranberry juice, Fresh lime juice
Use a Boston shaker or a cobbler shaker. If you don't have a shaker, you can use a sealed jar with thicker walls. Do not open the shaker before you finish shaking — you risk spilling.
5

Open the shaker and strain the cocktail through a sieve into previously chilled martini glasses. Use double straining (sieve plus strainer) to remove small ice pieces and any pulp from the lime. Pour slowly to avoid disturbing the foam.

Ingredients: Ice (cubes)
Use a metal cocktail strainer and a fine strainer if you have one. The cocktail should have a uniform pink color and be free of visible ice chunks or pulp.

Decoration

6

Prepare the decoration: cut a thin strip of orange (or lime) peel, hold the peel over the surface of the cocktail and gently bend it to release the essential oils. Set the peel on the rim of the glass or place it in the drink.

Ingredients: Orange zest (for decoration)
Use a vegetable peeler or a small knife to create a narrow spiral. If you don't have an orange, use a few thin slices of lime. Additionally, you can add orange zest to enhance the aroma.

Serving

7

Serve immediately: place the glasses on a tray or directly on the table, add a small napkin under the glass to prevent slipping. Tell your guests that the cocktail is chilled and ready to drink — a Cosmopolitan tastes best freshly made.

The cocktail does not keep well — after 10–15 minutes it loses its best structure and temperature. If you are making several cocktails, do it in batches of 2 to ensure each one is fresh.

Fun Fact

💡

The Cosmopolitan gained international recognition in the 90s, mainly thanks to the character Carrie Bradshaw in the series "Sex and the City." Although many people attribute its creation to one person, the recipes were developed by bartenders in the USA in the 70s and 80s.

Tips

🍽️ Serving

Chilled glasses and precise measures ensure the best effect. Serve without ice in a martini glass, with a thin spiral of orange peel or a slice of lime. For a more sophisticated presentation, use coupe glasses and a delicate mist of orange peel just before serving.

🥡 Storage

The prepared cocktail is best consumed immediately. You can prepare the base (vodka + liqueur + cranberry juice) a day in advance and store it in the refrigerator in a sealed bottle — add fresh lime juice, ice, and shake just before serving. Keep the chilled cranberry juice in the refrigerator until opened, and use it within a few days after opening.
