Description

Colorful, quick, and seasonal snacks for kids — "apple bears" are slices of fresh apples decorated with peanut butter, banana slices as ears, raisins as eyes, and juicy pomegranate seeds as a nose. The dish combines the crunchiness of the apple, the creaminess of the peanut butter, and the sweetness of the fruits, and the visual effect resembles cute animals that encourage children to eat fruits. A perfect snack for breakfast, a school second breakfast, or as a quick cooking activity with your child — preparation takes about 15–20 minutes, is simple, and can be adjusted for allergies (by replacing peanut butter with sunflower seed butter). It pairs well with natural yogurt or warm tea, and the colorful pomegranate seeds add a unique winter touch.

Preparation steps

Preparation

1

Prepare your workspace: wash the apples and pomegranate thoroughly under running water, then dry them with a paper towel. Lay out the cutting board and prepare a large plate or board for arranging the bears. Make sure you have a sharp fruit knife and a small spoon for spreading the peanut butter.

Ingredients: Apple, Pestki granatu
Use a sturdy cutting board and a sharp knife to slice the apple thinly. If you are doing this with a child, an adult should cut the fruit.
2

Slice the apples into rounds: place the apple horizontally and cut crosswise into slices about 6–8 mm thick (do not slice lengthwise). You will get 6–8 round slices from each apple. If there is a hard core in the center, remove it with a small round apple corer or knife, so that there is a 'hole' in the center of the slice.

Ingredients: Apple
The pastry should not be too thin (it will fall apart) or too thick (it will be hard to swallow). Use an apple corer or a small round cookie cutter to evenly remove the cores.
3

To prevent the apple slices from browning, drizzle them with a little lemon juice: in a small bowl, mix 15 ml of lemon juice with 1 tablespoon of water and gently brush or spoon it onto both sides of each slice. Do not soak them in the juice — just lightly moisten.

Ingredients: Lemon juice
Lemon juice prevents oxidation. If the child doesn't like the sour taste, use a minimal amount (just a touch).

Assembly

4

Prepare the 'glue' with peanut butter: if the butter is hard, gently heat it in the microwave for 10–15 seconds or stir it with a spoon until it is creamy and easy to spread. Scoop a teaspoon of peanut butter and spread a thin layer in the center of each apple slice (where the 'belly' of the bear will be). Amount: about 15 g of peanut butter for 2–3 apple slices.

Ingredients: Peanut butter
Use a teaspoon or a small knife to spread. If the child has a nut allergy, use sunflower butter instead of peanut butter (suggested alternative).
5

Arrange the ears: peel the banana and slice it into thin rounds about 3–4 mm thick. For each bear, use two slices as ears — gently press them into the peanut butter on the top edge of the apple slice so they look like ears. If the banana slice is too firm, cut it in half lengthwise to make it fit better.

Ingredients: Banana
Use a small knife or a cheese knife to cut the banana. If you are making snacks for small children (under 3 years old), you can additionally cut the banana slices in half to reduce the risk of choking.

Decoration

6

Create the face and details: use raisins for the eyes — press one raisin into each eye spot. For the nose, place one pomegranate seed in the center. If you want to add a 'belly', stick a small handful of crushed cornflakes or cereal puffs onto the peanut butter below the center of the slice (pressing down gently). Additionally, optionally sprinkle a very light pinch of cinnamon on top for aroma.

Ingredients: Pestki granatu, Raisins, Corn flakes or cereal puffs, Cinnamon
Make sure the raisins are soft — if they are hard, soak them in warm water for 5 minutes and drain. Keep allergies in mind — nuts or seeds may not be suitable for younger children.

Serving and Safety

7

Arrange the finished bears on a large plate in a fun layout. Serve immediately, preferably within 1–2 hours — the apples may soften slightly and brown a bit despite the lemon juice. If you prepare them in advance, store them covered with plastic wrap in the refrigerator for up to 3 hours.

Ingredients: Apple
If you are serving to small children (under 3 years old), cut the slices into smaller pieces to minimize the risk of choking. Make sure the child does not have a nut allergy — in that case, use an alternative.

Fun Fact

💡

The "bear" theme as a snack is great for learning — children are more willing to try foods that look fun. Pomegranates have been a symbol of abundance since ancient times, and their seeds add a 'sparkle' effect to dishes.

Tips

🍽️ Serving

Serve the bears on a light, flat plate with small perforated toothpicks (for older children) or alongside a small cup of natural yogurt for dipping. You can arrange them in pairs to create a "family of bears" — children enjoy telling stories while eating.

🥡 Storage

It's best to eat them right away. If you need to store them, layer them with parchment paper between the layers and cover tightly with plastic wrap — they will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 3 hours. Do not freeze, as the fruit will lose its texture.
