Angostura bitters

🌱 Vegetarian 🌿 Vegan

Description

Angostura bitters is an intensely aromatic, concentrated extract of herbs and spices with a dark brown, almost syrupy color. The taste is distinctly bitter, with layers of spicy notes (bark, clove, cinnamon), herbs, and citrus peel, along with a strong, long-lasting aroma; it is used in very small amounts due to its intensity. The product contains a high percentage of alcohol (about 44–45% ABV), provides virtually no calories or nutrients in a typical serving, and is traditionally used as a digestive aid, although evidence is limited. In the kitchen, Angostura is suitable for classic cocktails (Old Fashioned, Manhattan), non-alcoholic drinks, sauces, marinades, meat dishes, and desserts, where it adds depth and balances sweetness. The bottle should be stored tightly closed in a cool, dark place away from direct light; due to its alcohol content, it has a long shelf life and does not require refrigeration.
