Ground black pepper
Description
Ground black pepper has an intense, peppery, and slightly woody aroma, with a dark brown to black color and a fine, uneven texture. It provides a distinct spiciness and a subtle bitterness that enhances both rich and light dishes, giving them freshness and depth. Nutritionally, it is low in calories, contains trace amounts of vitamins and minerals, and the alkaloid piperine, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and improves digestion and the bioavailability of nutrients (e.g., curcumin). In the kitchen, it is used universally — for meats, fish, soups, sauces, salads, vegetables, and marinades, often as a finishing spice. Store in a sealed, opaque container in a dry, cool place away from light and moisture; ground pepper loses its aroma faster than whole peppercorns, so it is best to use it within 3–6 months.
